How to find the right tile flooring

Tile flooring can be challenging to choose from with the plethora of colors, patterns, and styles available. However, there are some guiding tips that you can follow. At Earl Smith Flooring, we can guide you to the right floor tile for your home.

Hardness

There is the factor of hardness when it comes to considering tile. The industry uses the Moh scale of mineral hardness, which measures scratch resistance. Class 2 is favorable for light traffic, whereas heavy foot traffic requires Class 5 tile. Classes 3-4 are generally used for residential. As a rule, the amount of foot traffic depends on variables, such as if your family is large or small, or if the living room is the center of family life, or do guests only use it. Details like this can inform our staff of the exact needs of your home.

Porosity

Two words that will inform you as to the porosity of the tile are vitreous and impervious. Porosity measures the density and absorption rates of tile. An impervious tile, like porcelain, is used indoors and out because it won't absorb liquid and is permanently waterproof. This is whether or not it is glazed. Vitreous tile is water-resistant but can crack with freezing conditions. Semi-vitreous and non-vitreous can be used indoors only and with dry rooms and not in the bathroom.
